Overview

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Director of Compliance is responsible for overseeing, managing, updating and maintaining the company’s compliance management system and fair lending program. This position is responsible for reviewing, managing and evaluating the compliance processes and procedures of the company in an independent manner, collaborating with the company’s senior managers and driving change. The Director of Compliance must be able to build strong relationships with all levels of the company and interface with internal and external contacts in a professional manner; interactions include state mortgage regulators, agencies, vendors, employees, and internal departments to fulfill requests and obligations.

Responsibilities

Provides leadership, direction, and integration of compliance activities to fulfill the needs of the company and ensure adherence to applicable state and federal regulations. Directs strategic compliance planning. Directs integrated implementation and evaluation of compliance initiatives and ongoing activities. Interfaces with senior leaders and government agency officials in the representation and development of compliance programs, policies, services and initiatives.

  • Provides assistance, leadership and guidance on compliance monitoring systems and initiatives.  
  • Participates and leads the compliance planning process, to include short- and long- term strategic plan development, review, approval, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to compliance in alignment with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Plans, develops, monitors, revises and implements compliance initiatives in response to changes in the law; consults with various representatives, both internal and external, as necessary, to ensure program effectiveness.
  • Surveils required regulatory filings, including the quarterly Mortgage Call Reports, annual HMDA filing, and state reports, with the assistance of the General Counsel.
  • Manages and coordinates regulatory examinations (state, federal and agency).  This includes, but is not limited to, exam scheduling, preparation, information procurement for examiners and review, and response to reports.
  • Remediate findings from various sources by validating the root cause and overseeing correction
  • Manage a high performance, results-oriented team that includes a data reporting analyst, HMDA data analyst, Encompass support specialist, senior compliance manager, compliance help desk team, and offshore support resources.
  • Oversee HMDA data analysis program, filing, continuous improvement and address action items.
  • Oversee accurate and timely delivery of required compliance reports.
  • Serve as subject matter expert on mortgage compliance related topics by maintaining industry insights and timely review of related industry alerts to determine applicability and risk to the company.
  • Engages across the first two lines of defense and maintain effective communication with department heads and process owners so that all personnel are informed regarding compliance requirements and work together to mitigate compliance risk exposure and participate in corrective action when required.

 

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of public policies, legislation, guidelines, and standards pertaining to the mortgage industry (a/k/a the Alphabet Soup of mortgage compliance).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop institutional policies and procedures.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Strong analytical, evaluative, and objective critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to interpret and advise on the application of various laws and regulations.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • At least 2 years experience with Encompass LOS and Mavent preferred
  • Must be able to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, identify, and escalate issues appropriately to management
  • Ability to build effective relationships with a proven record of building trust and credibility through strong interpersonal skills, communications, and actions.
  • Must be self-motivated and enthusiastic to obtain personal and company goals.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 7 years of increasing responsibility with significant oversight responsibility in mortgage compliance of mid to large IMB/bank-owned mortgage lender
  • Professional certification such as CRCM is preferred
  • Management/leadership in audit and regulatory exams
